What is Material Science?

Metallurgist January 12, 2013

Material Science is a branch of Science that reveals the many diverse factors in materials. Materials compose a wide range of metals and non-metals which must be processed to form the end product.

Information and knowledge about their different properties is very important, else the manufacturing processes could become complex and costly. Material Science investigates relationships existing between the structures of materials and their properties and concerns the inter-disciplinary study of materials for engineering and practical purposes. It is based on Solid State Physics and Chemistry of structure of materials.

The designing or engineering the structure of a material on the basis of these structure–property correlations, to produce a predetermined set of properties, is the main aim of Materials Engineering.
